Penggunaan SUPPOSE dan SUPPOSED


Kata kerja "Suppose" sering digunakan apabila kita ingin menyampaikan perkiraan atau dugaan akan sesuatu atau tindakan. Jadi dalam bahasa Indonesia "I suppose"  bisa diartikan "saya kira".Untuk lebih mudahnya, coba perhatikan kalimat-kalimat berikut:
  • I suppose you are right. (Saya kira Anda benar.)
  • I suppose the train will arrive late. (Saya kira kereta akan tiba terlambat.)
  • I suppose you two are brothers. (Saya kira Anda berdua bersaudara.)
  • I suppose Lutfi will visit Fitri on his way back from Bandung. (Saya kira Lutfi akan mengunjungi Fitri dalam perjalanan pulangnya dari Bandung.)
  • I suppose she is still cooking at the moment. (Saya kira ia sedang memasak saat ini.)
I suppose not atau I guess not (Saya kira tidak) sering digunakan untuk menyatakan perkiraan bahwa sesuatu tidak terjadi atau seseorang tidak melakukan sesuatu. Perhatikan kalimat berikut:
  • I don't suppose it's going to rain today. (Saya kira tidak akan hujan hari ini.)
  • We don't suppose he likes it. (Kami kira ia tidak menyukai nya.)
  • I don't suppose she will drive to Bandung herself. (Saya kira ia tidak akan mengendarai mobinya sendiri ke Bandung.)
Suppose atau supposing juga bisa menggantikan What if? (Bagaimana kalau...?)
  • Suppose I go there alone? Would he be angry? (Bagaimana kalau saya pergi kesana sendiri? Apakah ia akan marah?)
  • Suppose we do it this way? That would save time. (Bagaimana kalau  kita lakukan dengan cara ini? Itu akan menghemat waktu.)
  • Supposing you won the game, would you stand me a treat? (Bagaimana jika Anda memenangkan pertandingan ini, apakah Anda akan mentraktir ku?)
SUPPOSED TO 
  • DIKATAKAN atau DIYAKINI
  • DIHARAPKAN, SEMESTINYA, SEHARUSNYA
Untuk jelasnya perhatikan contoh-contoh berikut:
  • You are supposed to go there right now. (Anda seharusnya berangkat kesana sekarang.)
  • This medicine is supposed to be able to cure all kinds of diseases. (Obat ini diyakini dapat menyembukan semua jenis penyakit.)
  • You were supposed to give it back yesterday. (Semestinya Anda mengembalikannya kemarin.)
NOT SUPPOSED TO = Tidak boleh, Dilarang untuk...
  • All of you are not supposed to smoke here. (Anda semua tidak boleh merokok di sini.)
  • He's not supposed to go out on his own.(Ia dilarang/tidak boleh keluar sendirian.)
  • I am afraid I am not supposed to tell you about this. (Saya rasa saya tidak boleh mengatakan ini kepada Anda.)

Isilah titik-titik dengan  kata suppose (not suppose), supposed tonot supposed to, suppose not, dan suppose so.
  1. Fitri ................. to spend all her money on clothes. She has to set aside some of the money for her future.
